Chapter Twelve

Jane licked her lips and felt another thrill at the taste there. Miriam was asleep, her arm against Jane’s, spreading warmth where they touched. Jane didn’t blame her for falling asleep, since she’d probably been awake ever since she got the call from the bastard killer. But she didn’t know when she would ever be able to sleep again. Every time she closed her eyes, she was afraid she would drift off again and this time she would never wake up. She knew she was alive. She knew she’d survived. Miriam had proven that to her - twice, actually - but the fear was still there.

She licked her lips again and couldn’t help but smile despite everything. She looked over at Miriam, who was lying on her back next to her. She was naked, such a distracting sight. The lamp on the other side of the bed was still on, and it cast golden shadows across her face and other parts of her anatomy that Jane couldn’t believe she was allowed to look at. But considering she had touched and kissed most of those places in the past hour...

Jane didn’t know how long she was staring, but apparently it was long enough for Miriam to sense she was being watched even in her sleep. Her eyelids fluttered open and she saw Jane, then she squeezed them shut and pressed the back of her hand against one of them.

When she dropped her hand, she looked at Jane again. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing,” Jane said. “I’m sorry if I woke you.”

Miriam shook her head. “No. I sleep light. You could have just breathed wrong and it would’ve been enough.” She looked around for her watch or an alarm clock. “What time is it?”

“I don’t know.”

“You should try to sleep.”

“I think I’ve slept enough for a little while.”

Miriam looked at her, her eyes focused now. “Right. Sorry.”

“It doesn’t mean you have to stay awake. You stayed up watching over me. You deserve to rest, too.”

“It still feels rude.”

She sat up, realized she was still naked, and pulled her legs up against her chest. She wrapped her arms around them and faced forward. Jane sat up as well, taking her pillow with her and holding it against her chest.

“Do we need to talk about it?”

Miriam looked at her. “I don’t know. I was kind of in a fugue state. You said nothing after waking up feels real because you accepted you were going to die. I think everything I’ve done tonight is because I felt the same way. I thought I’d lost you. And I didn’t even have you. I don’t even know if I want you...” She flinched. “I-I just mean--”

“I understand,” Jane said.

“I don’t know what happened tonight. I know I don’t regret it. But for now...” She waved her hand. “I think that’s all I can say for sure.”

“Fair. I’m willing to leave it up to you, what happens next. You’re the one with the family. If this is too much, or too weird, or if you’re just not interested--”

“I am interested.
